My trip to Paraguay
I can’t believe that is this time of the year again, may is almost gone again, makes me wonder where did all these time go…what did I do with it? I’m super happy since my trip to Paraguay is approaching very fast, I still have tons to do, buy things for gifts (it is always kind of you to bring a little souvenir to your friends and family) people there like that you thought of them, it doesn’t matter the value of it.
Some friends want me to bring them specific goods from here, since the dollar is so low in Paraguay right now, people can afford to buy things for here more than before, and it always makes me laugh when I get emails asking me to bring all kind of stuff, from toys, to chocolates and from batteries to VS underwear…but what I least like is the last minute call, like 2 or 1 day before my trip, someone calls and ask you to bring a pink elephant, jajaja, well that happens often, and me…I don’t know how to say NO, so last year i left my coat here to be able to fit things into my suitcases….the result: we had the most freezing winter ever in Py I frizzed alive…well, that is life…but I’m lucky to have such a good friends there, someone leant me a coat!
I have some very special plans when i get there, since I’m going to stay hopefully more than 2 months, I’m going to work in some productions and maybe write a book about Asuncion, but that will be a surpriseee!! Well, I will have many surprises coming up.
If some of you is or will be in Asuncion this coming months please contact me.
Keep reading because I will post new pictures and some interviews with local people that I’m planning to interview while there. If you need anything from the capital of mis amores, please let me know!
Hope to write a short post before my trip, otherwise HASTA LUEGO and will be back with more while I’m there LIFE from Paraguay!!

My family & I will be in Asuncion this summer (winter) also! We will be there in July. I am so excited - my family gets to meet my family! I was an AFS student in Asuncion and will be visiting the family I lived with then.
Reading about gifts - I also have been buying things to take down (and plan on using the empty space on filling up with Paraguayan souvenirs for here!) What types of things are needed / exciting? I am thinking of coffee table books on Oregon and the US, tee shirts with local sports teams, etc., key chains with Oregon, etc. on them. What about things like Sesame Street or Hello Kitty type gifts for the younger kids? Disney stuff? Any tips or advice would be greatly welcomed!!
Adios,
Hilaria

Wow, thats awesome!! I bet you will have fun down there!
Where were you an AFS student?
I think that all what you are buying is great, they will love it, they also love hello kitty and disney stuff and of course sesame street. Everything like souvenirs with your cities name (even if they are made in china) I’m taking Seattle hats, victoria secret lotions for my girl friends and gap scents (they love it and it is not very affordable there), oshkosh clothing for the little ones, and play doh, crayons and markets. I’m also taking Seattle Smoked salmon and chocolates that they like (hersheys, twix, m&m’s…key chains, magnets and mugs are always appreciated there, I also bought disney t shirts from disney store for the kids, and a few toys too….Let me know if you want to meet for a cafe or so!! Have a great trip and keep in touch.

I’m counting down the days — only 32 days until we leave!! Thanks for the tips - we’ll be hitting the outlets soon. I’m also going to The Grotto (http://www.thegrotto.org/) to get something for my mama. I lived in Asuncion and attended Immaculado Corazon de Maria for my senior year (waaay back in 1979!!)
If we don’t get together in Paraguay - I’m in Portland so we can have a Northwest meetup!
Should I worry about stuff “disappearing” from suitcases on the way down? We’re stopping in Atlanta and Buenos Aires. I figure little stuff will be distributed throughout everyone’s suitcases, and expensive stuff will be in carry-on. Again - any tips would be great!
And I’m adding school supplies and hospital stuff to my list as well. Thanks for everything!
(ps - how do you spell “love” in Guarani??)
